Cover Junior ADU Conversion Nationwide

Cover Junior ADU Conversion: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Cover-compatible junior ADU conversion kits and components across Los Angeles, with most wall panel replacements and conversion hardware swaps running $1,400-$3,200 installed, depending on which series your unit came from. If your Cover ADU was built between 2018 and 2023, you may already know the pattern: the wall cassette connection points are the first to show wear, and the symptom is almost always a panel that no longer sits flush or a conversion seam that’s started to separate. Most owners discover the failure during a rain event, when they notice moisture at the interior junction, or during a remodel push when they realize the conversion hardware was never spec’d for a load-bearing wall. We carry the brackets, shims, and cassette anchors on the truck for same-visit diagnosis in most Los Angeles neighborhoods.

Ellery ADU Studio is an independent design-build studio and is not affiliated with Cover. We do, however, work with Cover-built units regularly, and we keep conversion hardware for Abodu and Dvele models in rotation as well.

Which Cover Models This Applies To

Cover’s product line splits into two generations that matter for replacement purposes. The Series 1 units (roughly 2018-2020) used a lighter aluminum cassette frame with a friction-fit wall joint, and the Series 2 units (2021 onward) moved to a heavier steel stud assembly with a bolted connection at the conversion header. The hardware is not interchangeable. If you’re looking at the wall panel edge and see four exposed bolts at the top track, you have a Series 2. If the panel slides into a U-channel without visible fasteners, it’s Series 1.

The compatibility issue we see most often in Los Angeles: owners assume all Cover junior ADU conversion kits are the same, order a Series 2 bracket set for a Series 1 unit, and end up with a half-inch gap at the ceiling line that no amount of shimming will close. Before you buy anything, measure the wall cassette depth. Series 1 runs 2.5 inches, Series 2 runs 3.25 inches. That measurement alone eliminates ninety percent of ordering mistakes. When it comes to OEM versus aftermarket, the OEM conversion brackets are the safer route for Series 2 units because the bolt pattern is proprietary. For Series 1, a good aftermarket 18-gauge steel bracket with the same 2.5-inch profile works fine and usually costs about 30 percent less.

Signs Your Cover Junior ADU Conversion Is Failing

Signs Your Cover Junior ADU Conversion Is Failing
  • Visible seam separation at the wall-to-wall junction. The conversion joint is the point where the original Cover module meets the site-built wall addition. When the connection plates start to fatigue, you’ll see a hairline gap open and close with temperature swings. That gap is the component telling you the expansion allowance was used up.
  • Door misalignment at the conversion threshold. The junior ADU conversion often includes a new entry door, and when the conversion header settles even an eighth of an inch, the door starts to bind at the top corner. The culprit is usually a wall cassette shim that compressed after the fact, not the door itself.
  • Draft or moisture at the floor line. Los Angeles isn’t a freeze-thaw market, but it is a slab-settlement market. When the wall cassette sits on an unshimmed sill and the slab shifts, you get a persistent cold line along the baseboard. In units near the coast, that same gap pulls in ocean air.
  • Clicking in the wall when the wind picks up. That sound is a bracket bolt that has backed off a quarter turn, and the cassette is now shifting against the header under lateral load. Left alone, the bolt hole elongates and the panel starts to rack.
  • Drywall cracks running diagonal from a top corner of the conversion wall. This is the late-stage tell. It means the wall cassette has moved enough to transfer load into the finish surface. The structural connection is still doing its job, but the cosmetic damage is the proof that a shim or bracket needs replacement.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a Cover junior ADU conversion in Los Angeles, the installed cost for a wall cassette shim and bracket replacement runs $1,400-$1,900 on a Series 1 and $2,400-$3,200 on a Series 2, where the heavier steel studs require more disassembly and re-flashing. Full conversion seam rebuilds with new hardware and drywall repair land at the top of that range. The spread comes down to two things: whether the existing fasteners are corroded enough to require drilling out, and whether your unit’s conversion point is accessible from the exterior or buried behind a finished wall.

Every quote is a written, line-item price under Haven Standard Clause 1, before any work starts. If the scope changes, the price changes on paper first, not after the fact. Our replacement work carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the finished conversion is not built to the permitted drawings, we make it right.

Los Angeles owners should also plan for the inspection angle. A junior ADU conversion that touches the original Cover wall cassette technically crosses into the permit territory of the original ADU permit. We pull permits on every conversion replacement that involves structural hardware, and we handle the LADBS paperwork for you.

You can check the measurement and identify your series without touching a tool. The 2.5-inch versus 3.25-inch cassette depth check is something any owner can do in five minutes, and it will save you from ordering the wrong bracket set. You can also photograph the bolt pattern at the top track and compare it to the manufacturer’s spec sheet.

What you should not do is attempt to unbolt and re-shim a Series 2 conversion joint yourself. The wall cassettes in a Cover unit are load-bearing, and releasing the wrong bolt while the panel is under load can drop the wall section enough to crack drywall, pinch wiring, or worse. The same caution applies to any bracket replacement that requires lifting the cassette even a quarter inch. This is a job for a crew that understands how the Cover frame transfers load. If your conversion seam is showing any of the failure signs above, call us at (971) 497-2402 and we’ll diagnose it on site.
